Jack Eljon (* 1937) was born in Amsterdam, the only child of Jewish parents. At the beginning of the Nazi deportations, the family fled to Schoorl where they had spent summer vacations. As the situation became more dangerous, Jack’s parents came to believe that Jack’s best chance for survival would be for him to hide with a non-Jewish family. His first hiding place in Haarlem was just one of many. During a raid in August 1942, Jack was lifted over the fence to the neighbors, members of the who – ironically – saved Jack’s life. Under the false name of Henkie Mulder, Jack moved from one hiding place to the next. After the rescue, he was reunited with his mother at a Red Cross station in Sneek where Jack’s father soon found them. Reunited, the Eljon family returned to Amsterdam, but the scars of the separation and his war experience made it difficult to heal and rebuild a harmonious family life. Jack Eljon was chairman of the association “Het Ondergedoken Kind” (“The Submerged Child”) for many years.
