Prof. Dr. jur. Dr. phil. Julien Michel Friedman (* 1956) is a German-French jurist, philosopher, publicist, author, and television presenter. His parents and grandmother were saved by the entrepreneur Oskar Schindler via a list as “Schindler Jews”; most members of his family were killed in the Holocaust. Friedman grew up in Paris. In 1965, his family moved to Frankfurt am Main; Schindler was guest of honor at his bar mitzvah. Michel Friedman is an honorary professor at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and was Managing Director of the Center for Applied European Studies (CAES). He is the author of several books and also hosts public conversation series, including at Oper Frankfurt and the Berliner Ensemble. Since October 2022, Friedman has been a member of the Board of Trustees of “Orte der deutschen Demokratiegeschichte” and of the Jewish Museum Berlin. He is a recipient of the French order “Officier de la Légion d’honneur” and of the Federal Cross of Merit; Michel Friedman has also been awarded the Goethe Plaque of the City of Frankfurt am Main.
