Frits Pront (* 1934) grows up in Amsterdam. When the German occupying forces took more and more anti-Jewish measures, he was no longer allowed to attend his elementary school and was forced to go to a school for Jews. Frits is also no longer allowed to enter the candy store where he used to buy liquorice. In 1942, Frits, his little brother Siegfried and his sister Jetty went into hiding with the help of the Utrecht Children’s Committee. Frits and Siegfried fared badly and were mistreated in their hiding place. In the meantime, they are even arrested and locked up at the police station in Utrecht, where they have to stay for three days. Frits is released and, after a short stay in his parents’ hiding place, goes into hiding again. He ends up in Hoograven and stays there until his release. However, his parents and Jetty did not survive, they were betrayed and murdered in Auschwitz. Frits missed most of elementary school and had to work hard to catch up. He later studied for a degree and a doctorate and worked as an English and remedial teacher in secondary schools until his retirement.
