“Eie Popeie” – a German Lullaby

Finally, Dr. Goebbels declares that all citizens will fulfill their duty, even if many are overtaken by distress and misfortune. In the capital of the Reich, the banner of steadfastness will be raised, and from the ruins of destroyed houses and streets, a new Berlin will emerge after the war, more beautiful than ever before. – 25-11-43
But precisely for this reason, we believe all the more fanatically in the German victory. The „Hamburger Illustrierte“ considers it its noblest task to spread this belief repeatedly to the German people and the world until a new Hamburg, a new „Gateway to the World,“ arises from victory and peace. – 12-2-44If a child‘s doll breaks into pieces,
It cries miserably, loud and in pain,
And such crying can spoil the mood
And cruelly torment your nerves. And then you say: Calm down, this lousy doll,
is not worth your tears anymore,
That it’s broken doesn’t matter at all,
At Christmas, you’ll get a new one.Refrain:
Eie popeie, you’ll get a new one,
Eie popeie, now just be quiet,
Bigger and more beautiful than your old one,
But just be quiet, my little child, and shut up,
Shut up now and just be quiet. And such a little child is quickly pacified,
Stops crying and becomes good again,
With the song, the sorrow disappears,
And with your lullaby, it falls asleep. And when it sleeps, yes, then it dreams of the new
Magnificent doll that it will never get,
Yes, such a child’s heart can be very happy,
And it accepts it when daddy sometimes lies.

Refrain:
Eie popeie, you’ll get, etc.

Even if enemy planes turn
Your home and belongings into a heap of rubble,
If you feel treated terribly by fate,
Don’t be sad, just keep up your courage.

Just stay strong, people, and wait for the victory,
It doesn‘t matter if you’re bombed out,
Goebbels promised that after this war,
Everyone will get a splendid home.

Refrain:
Eie popeie, you’ll get a new one,
Eie popeie, now just be quiet,
Bigger and more beautiful than your old one,
But just be quiet, be quiet and shut up,
Shut up and just be quiet.

Even if the Hamburg harbor goes to hell,
It doesn’t harm us in the least, oh no,
Everything will become more beautiful, so let’s just sleep,
Everything will become bigger and better than ever.

Even if Berlin is completely gone,
Bear it with dignity and patience,
Stay connected to the Führer in spirit,
Believe only in the lullaby that lulls you to sleep.

Refrain:
Eie popeie, you‘ll get a new one,
Eie popeie, now just be quiet,
A capital city more beautiful than your old one,
But just be quiet, and cuddle up, everyone shut up,
Shut up now, now just be quiet.

And such a German heart is quickly pacified,
Stops crying and becomes good again,
With the song, the sorrow disappears,
And with the lullaby, it falls asleep.

And when it sleeps, yes, then it dreams of the new
Magnificent things that it will never get,
Yes, such a German heart can be very happy,
For it swallows all of Goebbels‘ lies.
