Edith Zegerius (* 1941) was born to Jewish parents in Utrecht who – when she was one year old – entrusted her to a non-Jewish family in Amsterdam in the hope that they might evade deportation and death by going into hiding. Edith was cared for by and bonded with the family’s German housekeeper, Luise Reimann. Edith’s father hid in the Hague but was betrayed and deported to Sobibor extermination camp where he was murdered. Her mother survived the war, hiding in the province of Friesland. After liberation in 1945 Edith and her mother were reunited, though Edith was resistant, having been separated from her mother so early, she felt no emotional connection to her. She did, however, remain closely connected in friendship with Luise Reimann until the latter’s death. At the age of 20, Edith married Harry Zegerius, who had escaped persecution in hiding, and went on to work as a hairdresser.
