Ruth Bloch (* 1925) is the widow of Curt Bloch. The child of a Dutch father and a German mother, she was born in Dortmund, Germany, and – in hopes of evading Nazi persecution – the family emigrated to Holland in 1935. In 1942 her parents and her brother were taken to concentration camps, months later Ruth was taken to the concentration camp at Vught, where – having learned to sew – she worked as forced labor in the the Philipsgruppe, which manufactured materials for the German war effort. Ruth was the only member of her family to survive the war and met her husband Curt after the war in Amsterdam. Together in 1948 they emigrated to New York City where they opened Continental Antiques Corporation. The business closed in 1974 and she became an avid tennis player. At 99 she lives independently and is, among many other things, a great grandmother.
