The Big Mouth

Berlin, March 1 – On the “Day of Aviation,” the organizer of the new German Luftwaffe, General Field Marshal Göring, was presented with the marshal‘s baton by Hitler. Subsequently, Göring delivered a speech about the accomplishments of the Luftwaffe in Germany.
Our weapon is still young, and I wish it to remain young forever. I wish for a close bond to exist between the Luftwaffe and the people, to preserve comradeship as a guarantee of the German peace. But when the order to act is given, the Luftwaffe must become the terror of our enemies, and we shall not hesitate to strike with force.
In his Reichtag speech, the Führer stated that we will no longer tolerate mistreatment of ten million Germans across the borders; if necessary, it is the duty of the members of the Luftwaffe to stand by the Führer‘s word. The Führer also stated that the homeland is now protected by a splendid Luftwaffe. Therefore, we are obliged to always be ready to defend the country. Our weapon is inspired by boundless combat spirit and the certainty of victory. While we, as Germans and human beings, desire peace, as members of the Luftwaffe, we seek to prove that the German air force is invincible. – 2-3-38

Berlin, March 2 (D.N.B.) – Today is the Day of the German Luftwaffe, and on this occasion, Reich Marshal Hermann Göring has issued the following call:
“Soldiers of the Luftwaffe. On our day of honor, I feel particularly united with each one of you. Also in the ninth year of the resurrected German Luftwaffe, you have performed excellently in attack and defense, fulfilling the hardest duties. For that, I thank you. Comrades. The superior attitude of the German people, despite all cruel bomb terror, is our highest obligation. To this enemy, we will respond with new strength and new weapons, as he deserves. I trust in you, and I know that in the hours of great decisions, the Führer can rely on his Luftwaffe.” – 2-3-44

The American aircraft industry has challenged the Germans to a duel to the death. This duel promises to reach a breathtaking climax in the coming months. In Germany, this is not denied, but at the same time, there is full confidence in our own strength. – 7-3-44

That was the time of saber-rattling,
The beautiful good old days,
The time of future-confident chattering,
When you didn’t know better.

You had long forgotten ‘18,
Hoped for a new war,
Because your leader’s big mouths
Promised you certain victory.

The Luftwaffe, it serves peace,
Göring declared loudly back then,
But the reality was quite different,
They brought you the war.

But back then he still spoke of war
As an eventuality,
To which one only submits in case of emergency,
Only then, when there is no other way.

And then he speaks with a big mouth
About the ultimate purpose of armament,
When the hour of action comes someday,
Then we will be the terror of the enemies.

Yes, without pity, without hesitation,
And without consideration, we go for it,
With our good bomb carriers,
Victory will then fall into our lap.

Yes, power and greatness have been restored to us,
And respect in the circle of nations,
We will not abandon our German brothers
Abroad to injustice.

That is what the Führer recently promised,
We are the guarantors of this word,
The enslavement of the brothers will be broken,
The Luftwaffe is the stronghold of Germanic values.

The desire for combat is unbridled,
We know that victory beckons us,
Every enemy will be beaten quickly,
Yes, we are sure, it will succeed.

As humans, we desire peace,
But as soldiers, one still wants,
That the laurel be bestowed upon us
As a reward for a heroic struggle.

So spoke the Marshal once,
The wish for war has been fulfilled for a long time,
The war was launched,
The hunger for battle is satisfied.

The leaf has long turned,
Instead of conquering the world,
Your triumphal march is over,
You are the ones who now receive the blows.

Every day, new blows fall,
And one day you will receive the coup de grâce,
And your great love for Hitler,
You have long since let go of that.

You bumped your heads against the wall
Of the world colored and bloody,
And now you see, that in the long run,
The big mouth is not enough.
