In the summer of 1942, Curt Bloch went into hiding to evade persecution by the National Socialists. From 22 August 1943, he created small postcard-sized magazines in his hiding place in the Dutch city of Enschede, with the title: Het Onderwater-Cabaret (The Underwater Cabaret). These individual booklets circulated within the resistance network to other hidden individuals and their supporters. Bloch’s 492 poems in Dutch and German commented on wartime events and his emotional world. He produced 96 editions (over 1,700 pages) in total – until the liberation of the Netherlands in the spring of 1945. Welcome to Het Onderwater-Cabaret!
